EPPING FOREST OUTDOOR GROUP

The following day, 26th October, the weather was not set fair for a stroll up Ben Arthur to the Cobbler. Nevertheless... we're an outdoor group, so for photos of that - click here! However, four of us elected to take a car-trip to Inverary - about 20 miles away...

EFOG Tarbet  Tourist information and weekend weather forecast - Tarbet - 26th October 2008

Those of us that went on the car journey, Gill and Ralph, Paul and Val., drove to Inverary, passing Ben Arthur on the way. Through Arrochar, by Loch long and over the Rest and be Thankful Pass, along Glen Kinglas and along the shores of Loch Fyne to Inverary.

Possibly frustrated at not being able to walk the high routes, we had determined to end up in gaol, and so we did.

Inverary Jail is open to visitors and advertised as follows :

'A Prison for All - men, women, children, babies, even lunatics. The same rule applies today - we even allow dogs.'

It is known as a living 19th century prison, and opened in 1820. Visitors are treated to displays of the offences and punishments meeted out over the years, a very realistic court with proceedings taking place, and an opportunity to visit the cells. (website)

EFOG Inverary     The cells were quite comfortable :radiator heating - low energy electric light bulbs, comfy hammocks; Gill takes a rest.

Following our term in Jail, we elected to relax over a drink and Haggis, Neaps and Oatcakes in a pleasant quay-side restaurant. Val probably made the best choice of drink - a Gaelic coffee with more Old Grouse in it than coffee beans.

EFOG Tarbet  Tarbet - the loch cruise-boat can't dock
The Inverary crew returned to Tarbet to take a cruise on Loch Lomond. Unfortunately, since the day before, the largest body of water on mainland Britain had flooded - the landing stage was under water.
