EPPING FOREST OUTDOOR GROUP

A day trip to the town of Cefalu on the 27th December. A town on the north coast of Sicily with a historic centre- and narrow, tight streets leading down to the harbour. And it was through these narrow, tight streets that we drove, committed once we'd missed any opportunities of parking in a more convenient location. It was at the harbour - actually out on the bar - that we at last managed to turn around to get out.

Having parked, we walked back into the town - and back to the harbour - and made our way through narrow, crowded streets, stopping to look through the ancient gateway that had been the historic entrance to the town from the sea. We viewed the old laundry-wash that had developed from a spring and had been used by the towns-people until only a few years ago, and then past the Cathedral and up on to the great rock that dominates the town. Crag-martins were flying round the rock as we walked upwards, passing through the lower fortification walls and up to the Temple of Diana - a well-preserved Roman ruin. Evening coming on, we made our way down to the town to have a look in the cathedral before departing.
