Our first afternoon on the boats entailed a bit of instruction for many of us, and some practise for all of us. Essentially we had a boat of women - with one man, and a boat of men - with one woman. This arrangement seemed to be adequate for all.

For some of us on this trip it was the first time, or at least one of few times, that we'd been on a narrowboat. So there was a lot to learn, to try to be at least effective (if not efficient) at managing the boat.
