EPPING FOREST OUTDOOR GROUP

Our most strenuous day was undoubtably on 30th August with our visit to the Gougan Barra, in the mountains near the Cork/Kerry border. Gougan Barra takes its name from St Finbarr, who built a chapel on an island in the lake. The present chapel is a place of beauty and serenity beneath the Shehy Mountains that are the source of the River Lee. We climbed uphill and across the mountains - to fly a jury-rigged flag at a summit - and then down via an un-marked descent through treacherous, ankle-bending moor-grass and bog, with heat and flies above anything you'd normally expect from a visit to Ireland.
