EPPING FOREST OUTDOOR GROUP

On 25th October, most of the Group elected to do a walk from nearby Arrochar up along Glen Loin. It was raining hard, with a forecast that offered only a little hope of respite. Val and Paul decided that a more sensible option would be to go into Helensburgh, recommended from a member who had visted the town the day before. We have only one picture of that excursion - most of the time there was spent sitting wetly in a cafe.

The alternative excursion, to Helensburgh, was undertaken to see the Hill House, a National Trust property designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.  We fought our way against the rising Clyde to the Information Centre by the sea-front to be told that the opening times coincided by minus I hour to the time of the most appropriate bus back. Architecturally, Helensburgh - as a town constructed to a careful plan - should have been of interest. However, dampness reigned supreme and after a gallant attempt at architecture, coffee, hot chocolate and a gigantic meringue were more attractive. The bus journey was undertaken by a rally driver, but felt more like a boat trip. We were glad to get back to the hotel.
